Ashanti Star 1896. Unnamed as issued with a Black finish on ribbon. In very good condition.
The campaign into west Africa in 1895 was to capture the King of Ashanti Premph and his chiefs who were indulging in Human sacrifices. The campaign was led by Colonel Sir Francis Scott. This was the last campaign in which the British Army wore red tunics, and produced a high percentage of dead and fever victims.
The Star was designed by Princess of Battenberg, whose husband died during the campaign. Only 2,500 Stars were awarded, and are now becoming harder to find.
