TOULOUSE 10th April 1814
The final major engagement of the Napoleonic Wars, fought in Southwestern France. It was a tragic, unnecessary conflict. Marshal Soult heavily fortified the city of Toulouse, forcing Wellington to launch a costly frontal assault on the dominating heights of Calvinet.
This was an incredibly bloody encounter and the British and their Allies lost 5,500 Soldiers, the French only 2,700. Official Dispatches confirming Napoleon’s surrender did not reach Wellington until the 12th April two days after the Battle.
